NZS: From a Website to a Digital Platform for Slovenian Football

We redesigned the UX, information architecture and visual system of NZS.si, transforming a complex website into a clearer digital platform for matches, clubs, national teams, statistics and Slovenian football content.

For the Football Association of Slovenia, we redesigned the user experience, information architecture and visual system, transforming a complex website into a clearer and more accessible digital platform for following Slovenian football.

The redesigned NZS web portal delivers a more modern user experience, clearer access to content and richer presentation of data on competitions, clubs, national teams, players, referees and matches.

The project was not simply a visual website redesign. It was a comprehensive transformation of the user experience, data architecture and technology, with the aim of bringing Slovenian football together in one place and giving users faster access to reliable, up-to-date and relevant information.

The starting point for the redesign

The NZS portal serves a highly diverse range of users: fans, players, coaches, referees, delegates, club officials, parents of young footballers, journalists and other football stakeholders.

At the same time, the portal brings together a large number of national teams, leagues, cups, age categories and competition formats. In addition to senior football, it must support youth and women’s competitions, futsal, club and national team content, refereeing, statistics and official documents.

Over time, the sheer volume of content made the existing structure too deep and difficult to navigate. Important information was scattered across the site, similar content was presented in different ways, and users often needed too many steps to reach a match, club, result or statistic.

The redesign therefore had to address three connected challenges:

  • simplify access to content;
  • standardise the presentation of large volumes of football data;
  • create a flexible platform that can evolve alongside its users and the Slovenian football data ecosystem.

What did user testing reveal?

During the UX phase, we tested real-life scenarios with actual users, including searching for club information, the top scorer, a national team’s position in the standings, the scorer in the latest match, match dates, TV broadcasts and player information.

Testing showed that users had the most difficulty finding information about recent matches, calendars and broadcasts. Key findings included:

  • the structure was too deep and required too many clicks;
  • key clubs and information were not prominent enough on landing pages;
  • it was not always clear which season or competition the data referred to;
  • some information was incomplete or did not update quickly enough;
  • functionality was not fully aligned across desktop and mobile;
  • calendars and filters did not make searching simple enough;
  • live matches were difficult to find;
  • lower leagues and cup competitions were not presented with sufficient quality;
  • users wanted more control over the data and content blocks displayed.

The central expectation was clear: users wanted to find matches, results, broadcasts, clubs, players, statistics and related content quickly and in one place.

How was the UX redesigned?

A clearer structure

The redesigned information architecture creates clearer distinctions between national teams, clubs, competitions, futsal, grassroots football, the organisation itself and specialist areas.

We introduced a simplified main navigation, a mega menu, improved search and more consistent landing pages. Important content is now easier to reach, while similar types of data follow comparable interaction patterns throughout the site.

A richer match detail experience

A match is no longer presented as just a score. It has become a central data and content page that can bring together:

  • the result and match status;
  • live match coverage;
  • an event timeline;
  • line-ups and the official match report;
  • team and player statistics;
  • standings or wider competition context;
  • related news, photography and video content.

Users can therefore see in one place who played, who scored, what happened during the match and how the result affects the competition going forward.

Better presentation of leagues and cup competitions

The challenge was not only the number of leagues, but also the variety of competition formats, seasons, groups and competition stages.

The redesign therefore introduced reusable templates for:

  • fixtures and results;
  • standings;
  • player and club statistics;
  • top scorers and other statistical categories;
  • content related to individual competitions;
  • specific competition structures, such as East–West groups, play-offs and promotion or relegation groups.

This allows lower-profile leagues, youth and women’s competitions, cups and futsal to receive the same high-quality data and content presentation as more prominent competitions.

A comprehensive refereeing section

Referees were identified as an important user group and as a standalone content area.

The redesigned concept includes:

  • a central page for referees and delegates;
  • an overview of all referees;
  • individual referee profiles;
  • lists and statistics of officiated matches;
  • referee rankings;
  • events and training;
  • regulations and appointments;
  • an introduction to the VAR system;
  • referee news and a “Become a referee” call to action.

A referee is therefore no longer presented simply as a name in a match report, but as a visible and important part of the football ecosystem.

Personalised My NZS

An important step forward is the My NZS (slovenian: Moj NZS) user account. Registration and login form the basis for gradual content personalisation and the further development of NZS digital services.

When signed in, users can be presented with a personalised dashboard instead of a generic homepage. Depending on their role — for example fan, player, coach or referee — they receive a set of relevant widgets, such as:

  • favourite matches and broadcasts;
  • results and standings;
  • selected clubs and competitions;
  • players and statistics;
  • news, videos and galleries;
  • documents and official notices;
  • training sessions, events or refereeing content.

Users can add, remove, rearrange and configure widgets, as well as create multiple dashboards. My NZS is therefore gradually becoming a personal gateway to Slovenian football.

Regista as the data core

Alongside the portal redesign, NZS carried out a major upgrade of Regista, its central information system and the data backbone of Slovenian football competitions.

The upgrade enables:

  • more automated processes;
  • better data flow between systems;
  • faster and more reliable portal updates;
  • gradual enrichment and expansion of the database;
  • more detailed statistical analysis of competitions, clubs and players.

A large share of official data is automatically transferred from Regista to the portal. This reduces manual administration, improves the timeliness of information and enables more consistent data presentation.

The redesigned NZS.si is therefore not only designed for following current events. As historical results, appearances, goals and other events are added, it is also gradually becoming an increasingly comprehensive digital archive of Slovenian football.

How was the UI redesigned?

The final UI was designed as a complete design system rather than a collection of individual, disconnected pages.

The system includes:

  • a system of logos, typography, colours and icons;
  • separate colour accents for individual competitions;
  • tables, calendars, filters and search;
  • cards for matches, clubs, players, referees and news;
  • statistics and comparison views;
  • match statuses and live-content highlighting;
  • forms, notifications, labels and empty states;
  • desktop and mobile versions of key pages.

The new visual identity builds on the recognisable NZS brand, strong sports photography and a clear hierarchy of information. Results, statistics and key content are highlighted so users can scan them quickly, including on mobile devices.

The portal is designed for desktop, tablet and mobile use, while keeping the user experience as consistent as possible across different screen sizes.

From a website to a digital platform

The redesigned NZS.si is more than a modernised website. It is a data, content and user platform that brings together national teams, club competitions, clubs, players, referees, matches, results, standings, statistics, news and video content in one place.

The essence of the redesign is simple: users can reach a concrete answer faster — when the next match is, where they can watch it, who scored, what the standings look like, how their club is performing, which matches a particular referee has officiated and which content matters most to them.

The portal is conceived as a living system. As the database continues to expand, personalisation options develop and new digital services are introduced, it will continue to evolve alongside users and Slovenian football competitions.
